Virginia Museum of the Civil War
New Market, VA | SF: 13,500 | General Contractor: Skyline Roofing, Inc.
The Problem
The Virginia Museum of the Civil War needed a significant roof replacement due to sustaining damage from high winds and aging materials. The existing roof had multiple layers of old materials, including insulation and a built-up roofing system, that were no longer effective. To make things more complex, part of the project required the safe removal of asbestos-containing materials. The museum needed a durable, long-term roofing solution that would protect its historic collections and withstand harsh weather conditions.
The Solution
Our team took on the challenge by first removing the damaged roofing materials, including outdated insulation and the windblown EPDM membrane. A certified asbestos removal contractor safely handled the removal of any hazardous materials before new work began. To improve insulation and energy efficiency, multiple layers of high-performance polyiso insulation were installed, reaching an R-30 value to help regulate indoor temperatures. Special drainage enhancements were added, including custom sloped panels to prevent standing water. A thick, fully adhered EPDM membrane was installed to provide long-lasting, watertight protection. New edge metals and flashing were added for extra durability, and retrofit drains were installed to improve water flow and prevent pooling.
The Results
The museum now has a strong, weather-resistant roof built to handle high winds, heavy rain, and hail. With a 20-year manufacturer’s warranty, including coverage for wind up to 90 mph, the new system provides the building with peace of mind. The improved insulation will also help with energy efficiency, reducing heating and cooling costs. Our team at Skyline Roofing ensured that all work was completed with minimal disruption to operations, and a final cleanup left the site looking spotless. This project is a testament to our commitment to quality, safety, and expert craftsmanship.
